Goethehadsentmeaninvitationtodinner.AsIenteredhissittingroomIfoundhimwarminghishandsbeforeacheerfulfire.Wediscussedthemealtocomeatsomelength,fortheplanningofithadbeenanoccasionofearnestthoughttohimandhewasinquitegoodspiritsabouttheanticipatedresults,whichincludedsweetbreadspreparedintheFrenchmannerwithceleryrootandpaprika.Food,saidGoethe,isthetopmosttaperonthegoldencandelabrumofexistence.

DinneralonewithGoethe.Goethesaid,"Iwillnowconfidetoyousomeofmyideasaboutmusic,somethingIhavebeenconsideringformanyyears.Youwillhavenotedthatalthoughcertainmembersoftheanimalkingdommakeakindofmusic——onespeaksofthesongofbirds,doesonenot?——noanimalknowntoustakespartinwhatmaybetermedanorganizedmusicalperformance.Manalonedoesthat.Ihavewonderedaboutcrickets——whethertheireveningcacophonymightbeconsideredinthislight,asaspeciesofperformance,albeitoneoflittlesignificancetoourears.IhaveaskedHumboldtaboutit,andHumboldtrepliedthathethoughtnot,thatitismerelyasortofticonthepartofcrickets.Thegreatpointhere,thepointthatImaychoosetoenlargeuponinsomefuturework,isnotthatthemembersoftheanimalkingdomdonotunitewholeheartedlyinthismusicalwaybutthatmandoes,totheeternalcomfortandgloryofhissoul."
